Morning Sun

Seven days. See what happens.

Five minutes. Outside. Face toward the light. That's the whole experiment.

And before you scroll past thinking you already know this one…the why behind it might genuinely surprise you.

When natural light enters your eyes first thing in the morning it sends a signal to your brain to lower melatonin (aka your sleep hormone) and start raising cortisol (your get-up-and-go hormone). It sets your body's internal clock for the entire day. And here's the part that gets me every time — that same morning light tells your body when to start producing melatonin again at night. So you're not just waking up better. You're setting yourself up to sleep better tonight.

Ayurveda has always understood that syncing our bodies with the rhythms of nature isn't optional…it's foundational. This is one of the simplest ways to do exactly that. And modern science completely agrees.

A few things worth knowing: no window between you and the light (glass filters out what your eyes need). And if you wear tinted or UV lenses leave those inside. Clear glasses and contacts are totally fine.

The Method

When: Within the first hour of waking. Every morning for seven days

Where: Outside. No window between you and the light

How: Face toward the sunrise. Don't stare directly at the sun! Just let the light reach your eyes naturally

Duration: Five minutes. That's it.

Eyewear: Leave tinted or UV lenses inside. Clear glasses and contacts are completely fine

What to notice: Your energy in the first hour of waking. Your sleep quality at night — does it shift by day 4 or 5? Your mood in the morning. Whether you feel more naturally awake before reaching for coffee.

Watch for: On cloudy days still go outside. Natural light even through clouds is significantly stronger than indoor light and still sends the signal your body needs. Rainy days do the best you can. Even a few minutes in a doorway counts.
