Summer Series 04: Pitta Pacifying Entertainment
Nobody talks about this one. And they should.
We spend a lot of time thinking about what we eat, how we move, and how much we sleep. But what we watch, read, and listen to? That gets a pass. It's just entertainment. It doesn't count.
Ayurveda disagrees.
Everything you take in through your senses has a quality: heating or cooling, stimulating or calming, agitating or nourishing. And in Pitta season, when your nervous system is already working overtime to manage the heat, the intensity, and the relentless push of summer — the content you consume is either adding fire or cooling it down.
Think about how you feel after two hours of true crime. A violent thriller. Doomscrolling the news before bed. That activated, wired, slightly unsettled feeling when you finally turn it off? That's not just tiredness. That's your nervous system telling you exactly what it just went through.
Here's the thing: your nervous system doesn't distinguish between real and fictional threat. Your cortisol doesn't know it's Netflix. A violent show triggers the same stress response as a real stressor. And in a season when Pitta is already elevated, that matters more than most of us realize.
This week's experiment is beautifully simple… and I think it’s just a little fun.
For seven days, consciously choose entertainment that cools you down instead of heating you up. Rom coms, feel-good comedies, nature documentaries, cozy mysteries. Light beach reads, Mary Oliver poetry, an uplifting memoir that makes you feel good to be alive. Jazz, acoustic, classical, nature sounds… anything that makes your shoulders drop.
Laughing is literally Pitta medicine!
Notice how your nervous system feels when you're not feeding it fire. Notice your sleep. Notice your mood in the morning after a soft evening. Notice what you actually want to reach for once you give yourself permission to choose light.
Seven days. See what happens. 🔥🌿
The Method
What it is: A conscious seven-day practice of choosing Pitta-pacifying entertainment. Think content that cools and calms rather than heats and agitates
Ayurvedic principle: Everything consumed through the senses has a quality. In Pitta season overstimulating content adds fire to a nervous system already running hot. Choosing lighter content is a genuine act of self-regulation.
Duration: Seven days! Notice what you reach for and make a conscious choice toward lighter content
What to Choose:
🎬 Shows and Movies:
✦ Rom coms — classic and light
✦ Feel good comedies — laughing is Pitta medicine
✦ Nature documentaries — calming and beautiful
✦ Cozy mysteries — engaging but not violent
📚 Books:
✦ Light beach reads and feel-good fiction
✦ Mary Oliver and nature poetry — cooling for the soul
✦ Uplifting memoirs — inspiring not heavy
🎵 Music:
✦ Jazz — cool and breezy
✦ Acoustic and folk — gentle and grounding
✦ Classical or instrumental
✦ Nature sounds — ocean, rain, birdsong
What to notice: How your nervous system feels in the evenings when you're not feeding it fire. Whether you fall asleep more easily. Your mood in the morning after a soft evening. Whether you feel less reactive during the day. What you actually want to reach for once you give yourself permission to choose light.
Who this is especially for: Anyone who lies awake after a late night thriller wondering why they can't turn their brain off. Anyone who has normalized a level of entertainment intensity their nervous system is quietly struggling with. Anyone who needs permission to watch something soft.
Watch for: This isn't about never watching anything intense again. It's a seven day experiment. Notice without judgment. Some people discover they genuinely miss the edge. Some discover they'd been using intensity to avoid stillness. Both are useful things to know. 🫶🏼
