Summer Series 03: Moon Bathing
When was the last time you were outside at night? Not walking somewhere, not on your phone…but actually outside, looking up, doing nothing but being there?
This week's experiment is an invitation to change that.
In Ayurveda the moon carries something called Soma (a cooling, nourishing, deeply restorative energy that is the direct antidote to summer's fire). While the sun activates and intensifies, the moon restores. And in a season that asks most of us to push harder and produce more, restoration isn't optional. It's medicine.
Moon bathing is simply spending time in moonlight and letting your body absorb that Soma energy. Any phase of the moon counts. A crescent, a half moon, a sliver on the horizon…all of it carries Soma. But the full moon? That's peak Soma. That's the most potent, most nourishing version of this practice and it's coming. Mark your calendar.
Here's the experiment: go outside. Find the moon. Five minutes minimum, thirty if you can. Sit, lie down, look up. No phone. No agenda. Just you and the sky. Can't get outside? Open a window as wide as it will go and sit in the path of the moonlight.
And just so you know, the more skin in the moonlight means more Soma absorbed. The skin is a sensory organ. It receives. Wear whatever feels comfortable. 😄
Your nervous system has been running hot all summer. The moon has been there every night, waiting.
Good things happen after dark. 😉
The Method
What it is: A cooling, restorative Ayurvedic practice: spending time in moonlight to absorb Soma energy and reduce Pitta
When to use it: Every evening for seven days. Any phase of the moon counts, but the full moon is the most potent version.
Where: Outside in direct moonlight — ideally lying down or sitting comfortably. An open window works if outside isn't possible.
Duration: 5 minutes minimum — up to 30. Let your body guide you.
How:
✦ Find a comfortable spot where moonlight reaches you
✦ Sit, lie down, or stand — however you want to receive it
✦ Let moonlight land on your skin — more skin means more Soma absorbed 😄
✦ No phone. No agenda. Just stillness.
What to notice: Whether you feel physically cooler after even five minutes. Whether your nervous system softens and shifts from wired to calm. What happens to your mind when there's nothing to do but look up. Your sleep quality on the nights you moon bathe. Whether five minutes quietly becomes thirty..
Who this is especially for: Anyone running hot (physically or emotionally). Anyone whose nervous system hasn't had a real pause in weeks. If you're in perimenopause and the heat and sleeplessness of summer have been relentless, this practice is deeply, specifically for you. 🌕
Watch for: On full moon nights some sensitive nervous systems feel more activated than restored. If that's you try the night before or after instead. Your body will tell you. 🌿
