Summer Series 01: Sheetali

Can I tell you one of my favorite things in all of Ayurveda?

Your breath has a cool setting.

Not metaphorically. Literally. There is a breathing technique that lowers your body temperature, cools your internal fire, and shifts your nervous system from reactive to calm in the time it takes to do five slow inhales. And most people have never heard of it.

It's called Sheetali. And it works on the very first breath.

Here's why this matters right now: we are in Pitta season. Summer is the season of fire, heat, and intensity in Ayurveda. When Pitta is in balance it gives you focus, drive, and that gorgeous summer radiance. When it tips out of balance it shows up as irritability, inflammation, overheating, that short-fuse feeling, burning digestion, and a relentless pushing that never quite feels like enough.

Sound familiar? That's your Pitta talking.

Sheetali breath is Ayurveda's most direct tool for cooling Pitta quickly. The inhale through the curled tongue actually lowers the temperature of the air entering your body and that cooling effect travels inward, calming your nervous system and telling your whole system it's safe to soften.

Think of it as your body's built-in air conditioning. Available anytime. Free. No electricity required. 😄

And if you can't curl your tongue - don't worry! There's a variation called Sheetkari that works exactly the same way. Teeth together, lips parted, inhale through the gaps. Same exhale. Same effect. Same magic.

Use it before a difficult conversation. Use it in the heat of the afternoon when everything feels like too much. Use it whenever you feel that Pitta edge coming on and you need to press pause before you say something you'll regret.

Seven days. Your built-in air conditioning is waiting. 🔥🌿

The Method

What it is: A cooling Ayurvedic breathing practice (Pranayama) that lowers body temperature and calms the nervous system

When to use it: Anytime you feel hot, irritable, overwhelmed or like your internal thermostat needs resetting: morning, midday, or afternoon

Sheetali(if you can curl your tongue): Curl your tongue into a straw shape. Inhale slowly and deeply through it. Close your mouth and exhale fully through your nose. That's one round.

Sheetkari(if you can't curl your tongue): Press your teeth together gently and part your lips. Inhale slowly through your teeth. Close your mouth and exhale through your nose. Same effect entirely.

How many: 5-10 rounds per session

Duration: Seven days — use it whenever you need it. Notice what changes.

What to notice: The immediate cooling sensation on the very first inhale…it's real and immediate. Whether your shoulders drop and jaw unclenches after a few rounds. How quickly it shifts your state. Whether reaching for this breath starts to feel instinctive by day seven.

Who this is especially for: Anyone who runs hot, physically or emotionally. Anyone feeling the intensity of summer in their body. If you're in perimenopause and summer heat is making everything more intense — this one is very much for you. 🌿

Watch for: Avoid in cold weather or if you have asthma or respiratory sensitivities — the cooling effect can be too intense. Sheetkari is generally gentler if you have any concerns
